Mother of the Bride Outfits

  • Posted on August 5, 2011 at 4:51 pm

Congratulations! Your daughter is getting married and it is an exciting time for you and your family. Your search for Mother of the Bride outfits only one of the many items on your list of things to do, but an important item none the less. You want to look your best and you know the photos are going to be shown around countless times between friends and family. They are going to be placed in prominent places for everyone to see and so it is absolutely crucial you look fabulous.

Don’t let the pressure get to you. Shopping for Mother of the Bride outfits can and will be fun, if you make it so. It is a perfect opportunity to bond with your daughter and arrange outings together. This could just be one of the single most important experiences that you share together, one that will set the pace for your future relationship together, with her as a ‘married woman’.

She is going to be nervous and excited and looking to Mum for support and a level head. Be warned though, all this nervous excitement can lead you into troubled waters, so be prepared to listen to her ideas without criticism or judgement. It is her big day and even if you are taking the traditional route and footing the bill (lucky girl, if you are able to), it is still her dream day, not yours, and there are going to be times when you will just have to bite your tongue to keep the peace.

Here are some ideas to get clear on before you start shopping for your outfit:

*  Does your daughter have any set ideas on what colour or style she might like you to wear?

*  What colours look good on you? Especially in photographs. Maybe take a look at past photos of yourself to get an idea of which colours best compliment your complexion.

*  What are the theme colours for the wedding?

*  What colour are the bridesmaids dresses?

*  It might be an idea to communicate with the Groom’s Mother too about what she is planning to wear. It is a good opportunity to start getting to know each other.

*  What is the maximum budget that you don’t wish to exceed. Does it also include accessories?

*  What time of year is the wedding planned for? Will you be needing a jacket?

*  Will it be a formal, or casual occasion? Do you plan to wear a hat?

Above are just a few ideas to get your creative juices flowing. Once you have answered most, if not all of those questions, you will have begun to formulate a picture in your mind of the type of Mother of the Bride outfits that you will be looking for and that is when the fun part starts. Shopping!

Does anyone know of a shop in the UK selling outfits suitable for mother of the bride. I need something along

the colour of lime green. The shops are full of casual gear in this shade but nothing dressy enough – any ideas. I would even be prepared to look further a field i.e. US etc. if I could but online.

Try Debenhams, or any of the big department stores, House of Fraser, John Lewis, or even Marks and Spencer or British Home Stores.

Mother of the Bride Dresses

There are fantastic advantages to wearing Mother of the Bride dresses to your daughter’s wedding, as opposed to any other of the outfit options available to you. One being that with a stylish jacket, your dress will look good for the wedding as well as being able to be used again with or without the jacket.

I personally love long flowing dresses, but these may not be your choice and tea length or just above the knee dresses that are tailored look great too. A jacket in matching or complimentary fabric always finishes off the look well, not to mention allowing for weather conditions.

Advantages to choosing Mother of the Bride Dresses are;

Comfort

Dresses are very comfortable to wear and move around in, especially if you go for a good fit, nothing too tight or short, as these would not only be unsuitable and not befitting your station as Mother of the Bride, but also uncomfortable. Keep in mind that your job will probably be quite an active one on the day.

Style

Dresses have the added advantage of appearing one way with a jacket or shawl on, perhaps a little more formal, but with the added surprise that when you remove the jacket or shawl, of revealing a lovely shaped or decorated neckline that no-one could tell was there previously. This can give the impression of two different outfits entirely and add intrigue to the photos too. A word of warning though, as shawls can sometimes be bothersome to carry around. Whereas jackets can sometimes lend the added advantage of pockets where any number of emergency items can be stored!

Usability

You may or may not choose the same matching fabric for dress and jacket, but whichever you choose can be mixed and matched with other dresses or skirts in the future creating a whole new look and making this outfit a great addition to your wardrobe instead of just something you can wear to the one occasion.

Although I personally love dresses you will have to decide whether you will look and feel better in Mother of the Bride dresses or prefer skirts and blouses, or even pant suits.

Making a choice over the style you wish to wear makes your shopping all that much easier, because you can go directly to pages with listings for long dresses or tea length dresses according to your preferences and not become overwhelmed by seeing 1604 dresses available, because most of these will not be suitable and you really don’t want to have to scroll through pages of unsuitable items, which will sap your enthusiasm and enjoyment. Rather go directly to the page containing tailored dresses, or maxi dresses, once you have made the decision of what you are searching for.

Happy shopping!
